"We should create a Japan without military bases," says former PM Hatoyama. In 2018, the politician told me how he came to that conclusion after a bitter confrontation with Obama over Okinawa.
Thanks Tim for this great article. I am learning so much from your articles, history that either wasn't ever taught to us or if it was it cast the US as a benevolent power looking out for the prosperity and security of all the nations in the region against a belligerent China! I am now on a cleansing mission to rid myself of imperial propaganda and undergo extensive re-education to properly understand and interpret the world. And I look up to people like you and Noam Chomsky for that.
I have a question though. Can you explain a bit more about the pacifist constitution of Japan? I have been led to believe that a pacifist constitution was shoved down Japan's throat during the US occupation in the wake of the second world war and that Japan is finally sloughing off this impingement on its sovereignty and rearming and remilitarizing. I understand that this may be imperial propaganda that tries to portray the remilitarization of Japan as a move towards sovereignty under the benign watch of Uncle Sam, who has had a change of heart and understands that Japan cannot afford a pacifist posture in a dangerous part of the world. Can you shed some light on what's going on, especially with regards to the pacifist slant of Japan's constitution?
